So, the best of the 1930s movies I've seen for the first time this week is THE EASIEST WAY (1931) and deserves a mention. It boasts a legendary cast of Constance Bennett, Clarke Gable, Anita Page, Adolphe Menjou and Robert Montgomery, all during the starting points of their careers.I love the pre-codes that feel authentic and real, particularly the character driven ones such as these. This all feels so true to life and boosts excellent performances by everybody involved. You can see this is when talkies began to settle into their new medium. One the best scenes was Clark Gable's character's rejection of how sister-in-law Constance Bennett climbs the social ladder. He treats her like a traitor and judges her. His character changes dramatically once he marries Constance's screen sister, Anita Page.Constance is luminous as always, and the perfect actress to make this part sympathetic throughout. She gets under the skin of the "kept woman", portraying the bitter reality of being one, and the deep irony of the film's title.I'm sure the entire story would have resonated strongly with a depression era audience. It feels timeless to me... One of the few believable endings I've seen of late too! Thanks so much for sharing
